Our story

According to an AHURI study, people most commonly downsize for ‘lifestyle’ and ‘financial reasons’. In fact, downsizing is the most popular form of home equity release in Australia.

ATO data shows at least 60,000 people have downsized in the last five years.

The real number is much higher and experts agree it would be higher still, if only it wasn’t so complicated.

We empower homeowners over 55 to downsize with confidence. Our technology unlocks hidden off-market properties so they can buy sooner, and with less hassle.

A few years ago, co founder Darren Moffatt conducted research into why downsizers find the process so hard.

He discovered there are dozens of complex tasks they must complete.

Potentially navigate the tax system

It’s a lot, especially for older people who often haven’t bought or sold a home in decades.

Darren thought there must be a better way. He partnered with leading local software engineer, Seb Perez, to explore technology solutions.

Together they conducted surveys, market research, and dozens of interviews with industry to understand why downsizing is so broken – and how to fix it.

And just over a year later, iDownsize is now ready to make downsizing (a lot) simpler.

Downsizing is a ‘journey’ that can take years. It’s full of risks and opportunities that are hard for the average person to navigate. Our aim is to provide a simpler experience that empowers homeowners to downsize with confidence."

Darren is an award-winning entrepreneur and founder of Seniors First, Australia’s #1 reverse mortgage broker. Founded in 2006, the business has helped 4,500+ people over 60 years release home equity. He is also the director of leading digital marketing agency Webbuzz. He lives in Sydney’s Inner West with his family and enjoys live music, and politics.

Seb Perez

I believe in the power of technology to make a real difference to people’s lives. I love to design and build software that solves difficult problems. And in Australia, there are few life events as complex as downsizing”

Seb is a senior software engineer with over 20 years experience. He has engineered, architected and built close to a hundred successful solutions in the real estate, health and financial services sectors, amongst others. He lives on the Central Coast with his partner and two children, and enjoys the sun, swimming and local community.
